Hi. I was helping someone download and install DisplayCal. He has an i1Display Pro and i1Profiler. I wanted for him to do a verification of his current calibration before doing a new calibration with DisplayCal, but the button was grayed out. It was not available until after he first calibrated with DisplayCal.

    So the questions are…

    1. Is there a way to do a verification first, if you never ran the software before?
    2. Does it work correctly to do a verification when the calibration was done with different software?
    3. If the answer to #2 is correct, then is it also valid to do a verification when the monitor has internal LUTs like the NEC PA272?

My instinct is that it should be able to verify a calibration regardless of where it was done. But the grayed out button after first installing is making me question that.

    Thank you!

1-Try to install that profile using DisplayCAL. When requested, do not choose to install DisplayCAL calibration loader if you do not plan to use it.
Or install driver ICM (default, not HW cal result) though DisplayCAL. Then choose “Current” as settings. Close DisplayCAL. Set in OS/SpectraviewII/SpectraviewProfiler proper ICM (the good one) as default display profile.
If it is grayed out it may be because it things there is no profile.
Try to raise a request to DisplayCAL developer to change this behavior, it should be enabled by default validating default display profile in OS. (I agree with you, it is a limitation or a bug)
DisplayCAl does not need to do this EACH you have a new profile. It expects (in a wrong way IMHO) that you have used DisplayCAL to install a 1st profile. Once you do this, choosing “settings = current” in upper combo will validate default display profile in OS settings.

2-As long as you set measurement device in the same way as you did in the other software. Better to use ICCv2 if you can (also there is no reason for v4, ArgyllCMS creator has do about it)

3-DisplayCAL verifies if display matches its profile. HW cal does not change that.

SpectraviewII uses PA242W EDR (NEC_64_690E_PA242W_2013-02-28.edr) for correcting i1displaypros for LED widegamuts.
DisplayCAL uses another GB-LED (U2413, Dell_U2413_25Jul12.ccss) as generic correction for GB-LED like yours. You must select is as correction or transalate EDR binary to CCSS text file (ArgyllCMS oeminst). EDR = CCSS, 1st is binary, 2nd is text
Basiccolor 5 or Spectraview Profiler or i1Profiler use fro GB-LED RG_Phosphor_Family_25Jul12.edr. It stores Dell_U2413_25Jul12.ccss spectral data plus other non GB-LED spectralpower distribution samples. It’s “less clean”.
A typical well behved i1displaypro should show little variance when using one of these three, but you MUST select one othe these in DisplayCAL “correction” combo in 1st tab.

Thank you very much. That was helpful and makes a lot of sense.

I usually want someone to do a verification before profiling with DisplayCal so that they can see the difference numerically.

I don’t follow one item though. You state that after installing a first profile with DisplayCal, I can just choose settings=current. I don’t see where that is. Can you please clarify? Which tab and field will I see this? I have used DisplayCal many times on my computer, but I don’t see this option on any of the tabs.

    Thank you.

    Hi.
My english is not good but if I understand correctly you are looking for the entry “current”.
if so, that option you are looking for can be found in the drop-down menu next to “settings”. first item. it’s the same drop-down menu where you can usually choose a preset.
If that item is not there at the first installation of displaycal, try to choose any of the presets in the same drop-down menu and then change any settings. Now “current” should also appear. If I remember correctly in one of the older versions of Displaycal I did it this way.

    Gianluca is right.

Also I would like that by default button was enabled. Request that functionality to developer.
