How to choose a reference device?

I have different monitor calibration devices and I would like to scientifically evaluate the quality of these devices, but I don’t know which device to use as a reference or if I should do some other type of research.

You’ll have to compare them to a true reference device and see how they perform.

If you meant “I want to choose a reference device for whitepoint”, if in your list there is some xrite spectro and you are making it work through 3nm high res driver you may set “that’s my reference” and correct all other devices to that measurements  of WRGB 255 patches.
