Hi,
I did a calibration in HDR mode using Windows 11’s tool to calibrate HDR. It created an .icc profile, which loads fine in Windows’ color management menu.
But I am using DisplayCal’s Profile loader. When I add the profile on there, it spits out an error: “Dispwin: Error – File ‘C:\Users\joell\Documents\Color Profiles\XG27AQDMG_HDRCalibration_Win11_20250202.icc’ is not a valid ICC profile or Argyll .cal file”
I tried using dispwin directly to install the profile. Under Argyll 2.3.1, it gives this error. This was the command I used:
C:\Users\joell\AppData\Roaming\DisplayCAL\dl\Argyll_V2.3.1\bin\dispwin.exe -d 2 -I “C:\Users\joell\Documents\Color Profiles\XG27AQDMG_HDRCalibration_Win11_20250202.icc”
Putting the verbose flag (-v) does not show any additional information. I then tried to use Argyll v3.3, and this is the result:
About to open dispwin object on the display
Warning: ICC V4 not supported!
Dispwin: Warning – No vcgt tag found in profile – assuming linear
About to install ‘C:\Users\joell\Documents\Color Profiles\XG27AQDMG_HDRCalibration_Win11_20250202.icc’ as display’s default profile
Dispwin: Error – Failed to install profile C:\Users\joell\Documents\Color Profiles\XG27AQDMG_HDRCalibration_Win11_20250202.icc’!So I am no further than I was. Note, the profile *is* valid, as it was generated by Windows’ tool itself, and it loads just fine in Color Management. But I want to use the DisplayCal profile loader. How can I fix this?
I uploaded the profile in question.
Thank you!

Turns out, the problem lies with Argyll_V2.3.1, which fails to load the profile. Argyll_V3.3.0 works perfectly.
But, when I was testing Argyll_V3.3.0, I had mistakenly taken the path to the system32 folder that contains the color profiles, rather than my user folder (hence why I edited the OP, to fix the paths from a copy paste in the terminal). When it tried to load those, it failed… because it didn’t have admin rights.
Fixed the path with Argyll_V3.3.0 and now it works. To make it work with DisplayCal, and its profile loader, I went to the AppData Folder (C:\Users\YOUR_USER\AppData\Roaming\DisplayCAL\dl\) and pasted in the whole folder for Argyll_V3.3.0 there. Then, I renamed the old version of Argyll (2.3.1), adding a “_old” at the end (as a backup) and renamed the folder Argyll_V3.3.0 to Argyll_V2.3.1 . This makes Display Cal’s Profile loader effectively use Argyll_V3.3.0, and now everything works.
2025-02-08 at 2:28 #143004There is a setting in displaycal to find argyII . You can change it folders so you do not have to rename the old versions. I do think the new version is little better. I use a HCFR 3.5.4.4 with the new argyii complied into it. Maybe that is why things are working better.
