Im using a xrite i1display plus and have calibrated/profiled my monitor with calibrite‘s profiler software. But I do not fully trust it.
is there a way to validate this profile using DisplayCAL?

2024-12-27 at 0:00 #142652IF DisplayCAL has ungreyed “Measure report” in verification tab.. just run this.
All simulation profile options disabled and top “settings” combo selecting “<current>”.
This will validate if display in its current OSD mode and values + VCGT grey calibration matches the behavior predicted by current ICC profile set as default for that display in your OS settings. We assume that such ICC profile is the one obtained by 3rd party app.If that button is greyed you may be forced to install your 3rd party ICC profile it through File menu, as if it was one of DIsplayCAL. Current WIndows v3.8.9.3 shoudl nt show this behavior but macOS versions or 1st runs may have thus button greyed.
Now, there are two ways to validate with a colorimeter:
-using the same (maybe WRONG) colorimeter correction as that 3rd party calibration software:
it will show if that software is able to aim to thet target, even if colorimeter measuremns is wong.
-using the proper colorimeter correction, this validate 3rd party calibration & profile against what it should be.
As a first approach try to use the same colorimeter correction as the other calibration software, just to spot WP & grey range innacuracies.2024-12-27 at 16:00 #142653Hello Vincent,
thank you for your answer. I’m on an Intel Mac with Sonoma and the field under Validation is greyed out as you mentioned. Even after I install the ICC profile via “File – Install Display Device Profile” and select <Current> in the ‘Settings drop down, it is still greyed out. If I try to load it via the folder-icon next to the setting drop-down an error occurs stating “This profile does not contain target information”.
Is there any other settings I can try?

No, but you could try other approaches:
-a dual boot and verify using Windows DisplayCAL since you are on macIntel. Copy ICC profile to usb drive an then to windows. Make usr you install DisplayCAL VCGT grey calibration loader in GPU.
Or use a windows laptop from other people to verify.-a Windows virtual machine and do the same ******BUT**** IDNK if Virtual machines are color managed to behave like sRGB by default.
On this socenario VCGT is loaded by MacOS. Virtual machine won’t be able to apply ICC profile grey calibration (VCGT) but this does not matetr since it’s loaded by macOS.-run DisplayCAL-py3 for macOS, set all calibration taget to native and disable interactive measurmenet. This will change “calibrete & profile” to “profile only”. Use the only profile type compatible with macOS desktop color management: matrix single curve + blakc point compensation. When asked use the current VCGT grey calibration loaded from your ICC profile made with Calibrite profiler.
Profile & validate. Validation will verify if the matriz profile made by DIsplayCAL with Calibrite profile grey calibraytion matches that custom DisplayCAl profile. You won’t be able to verify id Calibrite profile matches yoru display behavior but you’ll be testing its grey calibration.First option using other person windows laptop may be the easier one. But beware HDMI level mismatch between your display and laptops. Typically if macOS shows 1000:1 contrast and pluggerd to laptop it shows sudeenly ~500:1 on the same external display… there is some HDMI level mismatch so check GPU settings and such.
You can also open an issue on DispplayCAL-py3 github to allow direct verification like in Windows.

2nd one takes 2 gams and intersect them to see coverage (custom gam, adobeRGB gam) with -i param -
