This is a noob question but when using an i1d3, if it has it’s spectral sensitivity recorded in firmware, why can’t it correct itself to cie 1931 so that it can work with any display, why is a ccss from a display required for this?

Because CIE XYZ coordinates are defined as an integral over visible wavelengths of spectral power distribution of light source multiplied by some observer, on each wavelength.
Your 1d3 lacks of such information, it only has a set of deformed X’Y’Z’ values that result from the sensor making the same kind of integration with colorimeter observer. Hence it does not know how big of small is the spike of lightsource on certain wavelengths. It may know that at certain wavelength its observer is 80% of std observer value, but does not know light source power at that wavelength, the value that must be multiplied by observer to get (accumulated) a color coordinate. That’s the information provided by CCSS.
