    Hello all, just getting started with color grading.
    I bought an ultrastudio from blackmagic and now im wondering how to actually calibrate the monitor to rec 709 gamma 2.4, what are the exact settings to calibrate it and create a lut for it?
    it’s my first time calibrating a screen and i really dont understand a lot of what the program is asking me.

    I have an ultrastudio monitor 3g connect to the computer.

    Is there a way to verify if its calibrated accurately once its finished?

    Its giving me an error “new_disprd failed”
    Im on an m1 mac and had issues getting DisplayCal to work, even thought i managed to get it working.
    monitor is an LG35WN75C-B

    Any help pls?

    3D LUT creation workflow for Resolve

    You usually profile display throgh Resolve output, full native gamut, minimum tweaks on OSD: RGB gains for D65 white and your chosen nits.
    Then create a LUT3D to simulate Rec709 g2.4. Then load that file into Resolve to let Resolve engine run the LUT3D.

    If LUT3D is active validate in DIsplayCAL using simulation profile + use simulation profile as display profile.

    Beware double color management, LUT3D and also macOS/Resolve using macOS

    Its giving me an error “new_disprd failed”

    In the 3D lut section, in order to achieve rec709 2.4, what are the values?
    This are the one i have right now, anything to change?

    Create 3D lut after profiling turned on
    source colorspace: Rec 709
    tone curve: bt 1886
    rendering intent: relative colometric
    input and output encoding: FULL RANGED RGB 0-255
    3D lut resolution 33x33x33 (supported format by the blackmagic bidirectional sdi hdmi 12G)

    My mac is hocked up via an io box to my monitor while i do the calibration.
    Im in a blacked out room.
    Are this the right setting to achieve rec 709 gamma 2.4?
    How can i verify it after its done the calibration that those are the right results for it?

    tone curve: bt 1886

    No. It is nit what you think it is. If you want 2.4 aim to 2.4

    rendering intent: relative colometric

    If you want to keep your current whitepoint, yes, this is a way.

    Destination profile must be an accurate description of display, VCGT applied.

    Since you are using a non conventional desktop GPU it wil be easier to aim to native gamma, then rely on LUT3D to make full gamma & grey color transforation.

    Of course you can keep your current custom profile for making LUT3D, but you’ll have to ad VCGT data to LUT3D calculation, since it won’t be applied in GPU.

    Display ICC profile stores monitor behavior.
    If that ICC profile stores grey calibration, VCGT tag, 3 x 1DLUT, then ICC profile describes monitor behavior WITH VCGT calibration applied to a common desktop GPU.
    If you do not apply gery calibratuon to GPU, ICC profile does not match display behavior (unless VCGT is al most equal to an “input=output” table of course)

    Since you are using a decklink or similar card, no VCGT. Hence when creatuing the LUT3D you shoud append that VCGT to LUT3D calculations.
    OR
    When creating display profile do not create grey calibration and let DisplayCAL record actual display TRC. Then create LUT3D.

    The two options will produce the same LUT3D under ideal conditions.

    Under different suggestions from r/colorists on reddit, i used bt1886 as tone curve.

    Are this results any good?
    Can i now grade in tranquillity using rec709 2.4?

    bt1886 will work in different ways depending your contrast. Google bt1886 spec.

    On low contrast displays like ypurs ir more likely to behave like 2.2

    No colorimeter correction, your white point is likely to be off.

    IDNK which backlight is used by LG35WN75C-B. If it is one of these multimedia 95% P3 monitors is likely to be WLED PFS family, so you’ll have to use that correction or a custom one.

    I coudn’t get the monitor to 6500K, the closest was 6300K or 6900K.
    So i went for 6300k as thought it was the closest.
    Also, i typed the wrong model its the LG 35WN73A, my bad.

    It having the color temp tiny bit different from 6500K a big issue?

    Last part of your message, i dont quite get what you mean sorry, could you please re explain?
    Would you consider it fairly accurate or do i need to somehow get 6500k precisly?

    CCT CDT is not the proper way to address white color. 1 coord in a 2D plane, missing another coord

    6400-6700K may look white IF it is close to daylight curve (the 2nd coord)

    Colorimeters do not match standard observer 1931 2 degree . Or 2012 2 degree. They need a correction to their measurements.

    i1d3 family, like yours, have a clever way of auto correcting using spectral sensivity data on firmware and some external data with information about spectral power distribution of display (SPD). The led backlight technology (+RGB filters) is the SPD.

    You need to provide an SPD sample to your colorimeter or your measurements will be wrong. So:

    IDNK which backlight is used by LG35WN75C-B. If it is one of these multimedia 95% P3 monitors is likely to be WLED PFS family, so you’ll have to use that correction or a custom one.

    Using no correction it is not even close to actual D65 no matter what uncorrecrted colorimeter says.

    Start reading wikipedia:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_illuminant (several colors on 6500K, only one is D65)

    or get a basic course on color management.

    Also read DisplayCAL documentation, or read Xrite i1Profiler doc or video tutorial, or Calman or Lightspace documnetation or video tutorials since all applications that use i1d3 colorimeter (like the one you have) will have to deal with colorimeter corrections.

    No matter the tool you choose… you’ll have to learn what colorimeter corrections are.
