“Supported Instruments” lists the “Datacolor Spyder4 (since ArgyllCMS 1.3.6),” which sounds as if the Spyder4 is compatible only after a certain time/event/version (ArgyllCMS 1.3.6). I’m looking at a used Datacolor Spyder4Pro S4P100 on eBay… will it work with DisplayCAL, or do I need more info (like a hardware rev) to find out if it’s compatible?

Calibrite Display Pro HL on Amazon

But nobody here would recommend even a new Spyder let alone one that was released back in 2012.
If you can find an i1 Display 3 or any of it’s many rebranded versions for a price you can afford that would be the only consumer grade colorimeter that is worth buying.

As a dumb newbie, I need a bit more context. i1d3 = i1Display Pro?

Or lesser model in the i1d3 family (colormunki display / i1display studio / calibrite SL)… although at much lower price since it’s slower amd it is not supported by HW calibration solutions like the ones form Dell, LG, Eizo…. etc.
Probably less than 150 euro for a pro model in excellent condition, less than 80-100 for a munki-version.
2025-01-28 at 19:31 #142923Beware rebranded pro models like the ones from HP/etc… ArgyllCMS will recognize it (Argyll knows its unlock code) but some other 3rd party apps using a limited SDK from Xrite may recognize only the OEM (OE-) or RETAUL (I1-) models. LeDoge’s hook or a modifies version of it its a solution to this.
Anyway, you can use them with ArgyllCMS without issue but such limitations must have an impact on prize.

2025-01-28 at 21:22 #142928Thanks much for the tips, all. At this point in time, I’m just looking for a cheap, compatible instrument so I can explore the software and the calibration process, and am not necessarily concerned with the quality of the calibration (although setting a refence white point and correcting my low-end Samsung LED TV maddening color cast would be a major plus).
If it turns out I’m smart enough to figure out the calibration procedure, and if it looks like calibration can manage the color on the Windows 10 HTPC driving the Samsung TV, I’ll spring for a better colorimeter when I get paid next month.
