    Hello,

How can I set lower display brightness level using DisplayCAL ?

With Measuretool I could first measure the display, then set lower display brightness in percentages like 40% 30% etc.

Then use Profilemaker to make ICC profile. Result LAPTOP or similar display profiled at lower brightness.

I can’t adjust brightness using laptop controls because it has to be set to 100% to avoid PWM display flicker. This worked very good. How can I get same results using DisplayCAL ? The custom cdm2 settings in it does not adjust anything by themselves.

After you apply a lut it will adjust your brightness.   Your black level will remain the same, so you lose contrast.   You can measure the cdm2 and then manually set the value to a percent of the max.   You might could make a profile useing previous measurements.   What is your OS ?

If your brightness is at 100% but you’re displaying a 50% gray patch, wouldn’t PWM still be an issue?

My OS is win7,  The custom cdm2 settings in it does not adjust anything by themselves. The monitor brightness does now lower if I enter them, there is windows pop up to measure it instead. I want to lower the brightness to despite having imperfect  colors like reading mode icc profile.

If you have no on screen controls then you can not do a interactive adjustment.   Complete a calibration and it will make brightness the set value.

If you go no calibration you can use driver tools to lower contrast and brightness.      Contrast is brightness.  You can lower contrast in drivers.  Not total brightness but part of the equation.

Not sure what will work.   Experiment.   i do not like PWM either.   Sensitive eyes.   I think a antiglare cover over the screen would help.   They made covers for crt montitors when they where 16 color 320×240.   The refresh rate was 60 but the screen was interlaced.   Thinking it will work.

With Measuretool I can adjust screen brightness before measuring the screen to create profile.

See screenshot, the profile is created in 2 steps.

    1. You measure screen with Measuretool, then can change brightness without remeasuring.

    2. Your measure and Generate profile with Profilemaker software

This is 2008 Year software, how come it is not available in 2025???

Have you created a profile with DisplayCAL with custom brightness? Upload it and screenshots of the settings used.
