What profile to use before calibration?

macOS always has an active color profile, unlike Windows, where I believe you can turn off software correction. So does it matter what profile is active when doing the calibration? Could the active profile throw off the readings?

DisplaycalCAL automatically disables all color profiles at the beginning of the calibration process.
