I’ve read through the DisplayCAL docs as-well-as the Argyll docs and still feel like i dont know how to set the the tone curve settings. Could somesome please explain the diffence between the tone curve setting on the calibration and 3dlut tabs.

The tone curve settings on the calibration tab only affect non color managed parts of the system (e.g. the desktop, most applications). The tone curve settings on the 3D LUT tab set the target tone curve for applications that use the resulting 3D LUT, much like the source profile embedded in (e.g.) an image specifies the target tone response for ICC color managed applications.
