Unfortunately Apple identifies every laptop display as “Color LCD”. As a result, with a few exceptions, the corrections for Apple laptops in the database are also identified only as “Color LCD”. They could equally be for an ancient standard gamut fluorescent display, or for a recent wide gamut LED display, and so they can’t be relied upon.
Perhaps there might be a way to encourage anyone who generously contributes their corrections file to specify the model of their MacBook (Pro/Air)? Or to make DisplayCAL tag the profile with the model number by default?
There would have to be a way to read that information from somewhere though.
The computer identifies itself with a model number, e.g. “MacBookPro15,2″ is the 13” 2018 MacBook Pro. This also applies to iMac’s etc.
Read programmatically, i.e. via some utility or API.
Running this returns the model number:
sysctl hw.model
Alright, that looks useful.
