What is the best way to determine the lowest possible black level for a particular display?  In DisplayCAL, the default target in the interactive adjustment window is 1 nit, but I hope the screen can go darker than that!

Note that this is for adjusting near-black hue (i.e. the display needs true RGB “offset” controls, which is generally only the case for CRT displays), not black level. If you have a sensitive instrument, then you can determine the lowest possible black level by observing the reported cd/m2. When the value doesn’t go down anymore when adjusting, you’ve likely found the black floor the display is capable of without clipping.

All instruments have decreasing sensitivity as the light level goes down. A notable improvement over most other “consumer” instruments is the i1D3 with its light gathering optics, which is rated for down to around 0.003 cd/m2.
