I have an X-Rite i1 Display Pro (the one specced up to 1000 nits) that I got a few years ago when I wanted to calibrate OLED displays. At the time they could barely reach 800 nits, so I ended buying it instead of the Plus version that can go up to 2000 nits. But with newer OLED displays reaching close to the 1500 nits mark, If I wanted to calibrate them properly, I would need to buy a new colorimeter.

But I remember that i1d3_hook existed and maybe though I could use it to unlock up to 2000 nits calibration with my X-Rite i1 Display Pro (since they are basically the same hardware afaik) and not having to spend money on a new one. Is that correct?

    Cheers

How often do you buy displays ?    Maybe one day there will 10000 nit display.  https://www.avsforum.com/threads/best-of-ces-2018-sony-10-000-nit-display.2949998/    https://www.oled-info.com/lg-display-developed-10000-nits-oled-microdisplay  .  I do not know if there is a display pro to display plus converter program.

No. i1d3_hook tricks software using Xrite SDK to believe that you have some device so SOFTWARE functionality is unlocked.

If your whatever-flavior-i1d3 is not certified to go beyond 1000nit, then on those situations is out of spec and may or may not measure correctly.
Internal gains tweaked to measure 2000nit is not a software functionality. It’s hardware although i1d3 operation is the same.
Using i1displaypro SDK on a munki is software functionality. Using Calman’s colorimeter C6 EDR/CCSS is a software functionality.
