Contact Data and Other Identifiable Information

This site collects certain user information, which may include a username and password, contact information, or any other data that you type in to the site. It may also identify your IP address to help recognize you on future visits to the site. At our discretion, the Site may use this data to:

  • Personalize or improve the user experience and/or service
  • Administer a survey or other site feature or function
  • Send email to users (e.g. if you opt in to receive forum topic updates)

Note that apart from access date/time, IP address, browser (user agent) and referring URL information which will be recorded by our hosting provider in an anonymized way and may be sent from your browser (without our involvement) to third party services we embed by technical convention, all other data collection happens strictly on an opt-in basis, and we do not share it with or otherwise transfer it to third parties unless required for legal purposes (please see the section on who we share your data with for details). You can use the site and some of its services without registering a user account.

This data is used to create your user profile at our website. You can revoke this consent at any time by contacting us.

Mobile Device Privacy

Your mobile network service providers may collect device-specific information, such as a device identifier, when you use our website. This information collected by your mobile network service will not be associated with your user account with us, or with your personally identifiable information.

When visitors leave comments or posts on the site, we collect the data entered into the associated form fields, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

After approval of your comment or post, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment or post.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles and forum posts on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor had visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Who we share your data with

When you visit our website, the access date/time, IP address, browser (user agent) and referring URL information will be recorded by our hosting provider in an anonymized way. Your browser may also send this information (without our involvement) to any third party services we embed by technical convention. Any personal information that you enter on our site will not be shared with or otherwise transferred to third parties (with the exception of our hosting provider, who is only allowed to access said information to comply with the law, or to protect ours or others’ legal rights, property, or safety, and is bound to keep your information confidential).

We use the Google webfonts service as well as CloudFlare content delivery network to optimize the performance and availability of our website. Google as well as CloudFlare are certified under the Privacy Shield Framework (Google on Privacy Shield, CloudFlare on PrivacyShield) for compliance to the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Also see Google’s privacy policy and CloudFlare’s privacy and security policy.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it, to facilitate showing a profile picture. Also see Gravatar’s privacy policy. To protect our user’s privacy under the EU General Data Protection Regulation, profile pictures are cached and never retrieved by the user’s browser from Gravatar’s servers directly.

Google, CloudFlare and Gravatar are services based in the US, outside the EU.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment or forum post, it and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments and posts automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username), or request removal by contacting us. Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments or posts, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

What third parties we receive data from

When you use the Social Login functionality, we may receive data from your profile on the social network you’re using to login. See Login via Facebook, Google, LinkedIn or Twitter (“Social Login”).

How we protect your data

Any information exchanged with the site is transmitted over a secure encrypted connection which prevents eavesdropping by third parties, and administrative access to any stored data is limited to the Site owners and their agents, all of whom are trained in data protection according to information technology security best practices and EU legislation. We also follow a principle of data reduction and data economy, to avoid the collection of unnecessary data (i.e. we collect the minimum amount of data necessary to provide the Site and its services).
