PS I’ve sent you a private message, see if you got it.

Welp, that’s why there is such thing as opensource. Sometimes.

FWIW, the folks at the list did say the bug got introduced some time after 10.14.3, so it must be somewhat recent. Not the first time Apple screwed up, neither the last. Luckily we still have everything before Mojave that works, as I said it did work fine in El Capitan for me, but then I upgraded straight to 10.14.5 and so started witnessing that…[Read more]

Folks on Discord confirm the bug is present in Catalina beta 3.

Beats me too. The problem certainly occurred earlier than the recent update.

Here’s an interesting snippet from the conversation they have ongoing:

If display calibration software, which puts native RGB values up on the screen with calibration disabled, instead gets colors that are artificially lighter in the shadows with the largest error bei…

I see your post. Great. Let’s hope that at least anyone can chime in.

So the profile would/should work just fine in Windows, then? Don’t have access to it, can’t check.

And then it’s just the displays. How about, say, paper profiles provided by paper manufacturers? I don’t know much about those, but could it be that they are affected as well…[Read more]

Don’t know if it helps, probably not, but I watched Console while switching between profiles and got those warnings (also on some supported and Apple-provided profiles):

[WARN] - Attempting to get 3-channel linearization table capabilities from plane with no 3-channel linearization table support

    CGColorCurveGetParameters: CGColorCurve type…[Read more]

Just a quick one: so I imagine those new Apple monitors don’t really need any fancy profiles (provided by Apple) and having a basic curves profile like they have for any other embedded display is enough?

Well, DisplayCAL is really a GUI on top of Argyll CMS (https://www.argyllcms.com). So you might as well ask Graeme about the issue. Also if you have the time, why not post a message to https://lists.apple.com/mailman/listinfo/colorsync-users? I may do it myself later but if you have the time, do ask about our issue on the list.

    I’d like to hear…[Read more]

The colorsync-users list is almost exclusively used by industry professionals, with a relatively strong print- and prepress-centric focus. I assume not many care about Apple’s Preview there, as most are using Adobe’s or other professional solutions (which have their own CMMs, thankfully largely unaffected by Apple bugs).

    I haven’t browsed it,…[Read more]

Enable “Show Advanced Options” and you will see three options for RGB ranges.

System report does indeed describe the display as Television, but I don’t believe that affects the RGB now that the display profile had been patched. Detecting it as Television enables overscan feature in displays config panel which may be useful.

    It’s not the limited…[Read more]

It could also be due to me testing all of this out on a hackintoshed Mojave running on AMD Ryzen. Could partially explain why I never had issues in El Capitan which ran on a 2008 Mac Pro. I would have expected a crash, but it may very well be due to CPU instruction incompatibilities that trigger some kind of fallback behavior which in turn produce…[Read more]

No, instabilities don’t “magnify” that particular problem. You can download the profile I created, it’s posted earlier in this thread, apply it and see if Preview misbehaves on your machine in any way with that profile.

The panel is forced into full RGB mode (0-255) so it is treated like a regular display by the OS.

Not trying to be difficult, just want to understand, how exactly my display stability issues which get into the profile make Photoshop and Preview display two different images of the same file at the same time on the same display? I fail to see how this is related because the ICC profile, however “untrue” it may be, is the same for both apps.…[Read more]

All right, so what is the bottom line? I did everything as you suggested, reset Displaycal to defaults and redid calibration. The result is the same difference in macos apps and apps using their own CMM.

Do we agree it’s an inherent flaw of macos and Displaycal-created profiles can not be used reliably with Apple’s CMM in recent macos versions in…[Read more]

I’ve tried doing defaults and those issues persist and are not addressed by using defaults. Things look different compared to, say XYZ LUT profiles, but the difference between macos apps and Photoshop still remains. Displaycal defaults aren’t helping there. I can get a broadly similar picture at most but it’s still always visibly different, to…[Read more]

I thought you might know more about why that is happening than I do. Certainly some profiles (such as the various ones provided with the OS, or the display EDID profile) work correctly – i.e. the same in Preview and PS. The post on stackoverflow that I linked mentions that – specifically that newer macos versions don’t “like” profiles created by…[Read more]

It’s not stable because it’s a plasma and I set the calibration speed to high. I will definitely get to that later, but at the moment the problem is that the color profile itself is different in Preview and Photoshop, regardless of its trueness to the actual display. In other words, even if it doesn’t fully match the actual display, it should…[Read more]
