I am running Linux Mint 19, DisplayCAL 3.8.9.3 , SpyderX and when I try to calibrate I get the dreaded new-disprd failed with “instrument Acess Failed’ message.
ran lsusb in Terminal and it shows the SpyderX as being connected :
Bus 008 Device 008: ID 085c:0a00 ColorVision, Inc.
but if I look for it using the Computer icon on my desktop it does not show, as if Linux does not recognize the device, or there is some permissions issue. In the log file I get:
DisplayCAL: Starting interaction with subprocess
16:12:06,226 Number of patches = 3
16:12:06,242 Setting up the instrument
16:12:06,252 usb_open_port: open ‘/dev/bus/usb/008/007’ config 1 failed (-1) (Permissions ?)
16:12:06,255 usb_open_port: open ‘/dev/bus/usb/008/007’ config 1 failed (-1) (Permissions ?)
16:12:06,258 dispread: Error – new_disprd failed with ‘Instrument Access Failed’After research here, I saw more than once to to to Tools>Instrument and Uninstall ArgyllCMS Installation files, but when I try to do that I get a warning that those files are system files, do you really want to do this?
The Argyll files installed on my version of Linux Mint are 2.02.0 and the latest are 2.1.
Bottom line: I am trying to figure out how to get the beastie to recognize the Spyder, but don’t want to cause problems by messing with system files.
Question 2: I have downloaded the TAR file with the latest Argyll files, can someone give me the specific steps to update/replace the older files. For example, where do I place those files in my system so that DisplayCAL will find them if I use it to upgrade to the new files. Sorry about such a basic question!
Thanks for assistance in advance!

Installing updated udev rules is necessary. Nothing to loose here, old files are backed up.
2020-09-13 at 23:58 #26077So I gave up on this completely as I just kept on running into dead ends.
Tried again on a new computer. Deleted and reinstalled Argyll files. Still no success. It is definitely a permissions problem. I ran getfacl /dev/bus/usb/002/ and it shows only root can write to it. How do I change the permissions?
I tried running it as root, and it would start and run, then I would get a new error saying it could not write to a file.
Please help me, I’d really like to get this running, and thank you for your assistance.
2020-09-14 at 0:35 #26080Actually I just solved the permission problem and it was stupid simple. Please feel free to laugh.
I opened my file browser as root, went to the DisplaCAL folder, and changed the permissions for owner and group. Now its working.
